  • 50% of the world population live in cities of 10 million people or more
  • Every second, the urban population grows by 2 people
  • Half of the world hospitalization is due to  water related disease
  • Every year, more people die from unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war
  • Progress in access to water and sanitation is undermined by the rapid urban population growth in the last decades.
  • International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March to draw attention to the importance of freshwater and management of freshwater resources.

Getting involved

  • Water is a very scarce global resource
  • Less than 1% of the Earth’s water available for drinking
  • Encourage your family and community to conserve water
  • Collect rainwater for watering your plants
  • Get faucets with low flow aerators.
  • Repair any dripping taps or leaks
  • Only run the washing machine if you have a full load
  • Shortening the shower by even two minutes can even conserve water ...
  • Raise the issues related to water scarcity within your group and learn more.
